According to the London 2012 website, more than 10,000 people will be working as part of the games. The seventeen-day event is a huge operation and the organisers have been busily recruiting like a new company, one with colossal financial backing. Starting before Britain won the Olympic bid, every conceivable role from Security and Ushers to Finance Managers, Programme Directors and Business Development teams, to name just a few, have been sourced, interviewed, security checked and hired.
What will happen to these employees after the Olympic torch has gone out in a lavish closing ceremony? The specially built venues will continue to be used for a myriad of events, but the scale and intensity will be reduced. The crowds will disperse, the media spotlight will be focused on a new target and, unfortunately, many of the employees will be at the end of their contracts.
