There’s no doubt about it, X-Factor has taken the world by storm. We tune in every week to see some poor soul’s dream of becoming the next Beyoncé shattered or conversely, to see a shining star born.
The show provides great guidance on things such as what not to wear, what not to sing, what not to say to a judge. Naturally, there are some poignant comparisons to be made between the show and the recruitment process.
The Audition
It’s a nervous, tense time, full of excited anticipation. The performers line up, wearing their best outfits, practicing their high notes, worrying if they chose the right song and thinking about how they are going to ‘wow’ the judges.
The same is true for that first stage of an application, but in this instance it’s your CV that needs the attention. You need to make your CV stand out from the crowd and have the edge over all other CVs. It needs to look great, sound great and most of all, it needs to make it to the next stage of the audition. You only have one shot so make it count.
Boot Camp
So your CV made it onto the ‘yes’ pile and you’ve gotten through to the next stage. Now you have to bring your personality into the game. Your CV alone has got you this far but no one knows yet what really makes you tick. The X-Factor contestants get a chance to make good on that cracking first audition and you get a chance to really explain why you are a brilliant candidate. There’s only so much information a CV can provide. Take this opportunity to explain your roles, targets, skills, goals and anything else you think will help to provide a true reflection of your abilities.
The Judges’ Houses
Now it’s over to us. We use information from the ‘performances’ so far to make sure we have a good feel for every candidate’s personality, skill set and career/job goals. Now it’s time to create the shortlist of potentials that we, as the ‘judges’ believe would suit our clients best.
The Live Show
Now it’s time to launch our stars! Once we have that shortlist of sterling ‘performers’ ready, we speak to our clients and tell them all about you. The goal here is matching the skill sets we have in our candidates with what the company needs. It can take some time, but it’s our opportunity to convey to our client everything we have learnt about each candidate that we take forward.
The Public Vote
Once your CV has been selected by the client, you are through to the interview process. Now it’s well and truly over to you to impress.
Interviews can take various forms, such as initial call screenings or face-to-face meetings. You will need to prove your worth and show the client why you are the best person for the job. This could mean drawing on past work situations where you’ve exceeded expectations, solved problems, set precedents etc. It’s also time for that personality to shine through. Potential employers aren’t looking for superior skills alone – they’re looking for that person to be someone they can see working well with others and joining in with the established company culture.
Singing for Survival
It’s not over yet. Depending on the level of the role you are going for, you could be recalled for subsequent interviews, each one with a different focus. This is where endurance kicks in. You have to maintain the confidence and drive you had in that first interview.
Winner
You’re almost there; you’ve done the hard part. Now all you can do is wait patiently (as hard as it can be!) for the final outcome.
Now comes the wait…
